South of the Border

South of the Border is a rest stop and roadside attraction that sits just south of the border between North Carolina and South Carolina, on Interstate 95 and US Highway 301/501. Along with its restaurants and motel, visitors are assaulted by bold colors and blatant caricatures. Empty and garish—like a silent, desperate scream—it beckons passersby with promises of shopping and fireworks, but what it really offers is a graveyard—a Baudrillardian simulacrum-turned-nightmare of the American rest stop.
